biography

"A trumpet that flows between the melancholic and the playful."
Josiah Blackmore, Cultural Critic

Trumpeter and composer Mike Field is a Toronto-based musician who performs regularly at jazz venues, festivals and on tour both in Canada and internationally. He is currently recording a full-length album of original jazz compositions with his combo, and has taken part in the Downtown Toronto Jazz Festival for the past two years.

Mike began studying trumpet classically at the age of 10. After many years of private lessons with the Toronto Symphony’s Bart Woomert, he studied at New York University with Warren Vaché and Laurie Frink.

After touring Canada three times, he and the rock/funk band Jay Spectre were awarded a grant from the Ontario Arts Council to tour New Zealand in January 2010 to promote their latest album. He has played for full houses at Toronto’s Horseshoe Tavern, El Mocambo and other renowned venues in many Canadian cities. In the reggae collective High Plains Drifter, Mike has performed at the Toronto Beaches Jazz Festival and at numerous Bob Marley and Peter Tosh tribute shows in his hometown. As a member of the experimental music group the cs field trio, Mike has toured throughout Germany and France, including the FIMU Festival in Belfort, France. In New Zealand, his trumpet can be heard in the experimental bossa-nova collective The Inverts
